 VERSE 1

śhrī bhagavān uvācha mayyāsakta-manāḥ pārtha yogaṁ yuñjan mad-āśhrayaḥ asanśhayaṁ samagraṁ māṁ yathā jñāsyasi tach chhṛiṇu

The Supreme Lord spoke, saying, "Now hear, O Arjun, how you can know Me fully, without any doubt, by practicing bhakti yog and focusing your mind only on Me."

 VERSE 2

jñānaṁ te ’haṁ sa-vijñānam idaṁ vakṣhyāmyaśheṣhataḥ yaj jñātvā neha bhūyo ’nyaj jñātavyam-avaśhiṣhyate

I will now fully reveal to you this wisdom and understanding, without which there is nothing left to know in this world.

 VERSE 3

manuṣhyāṇāṁ sahasreṣhu kaśhchid yatati siddhaye yatatām api siddhānāṁ kaśhchin māṁ vetti tattvataḥ

Hardly one in a thousand aspires to perfection; and of those who have attained perfection, very few truly know Me.

 VERSE 4

bhūmir-āpo ’nalo vāyuḥ khaṁ mano buddhir eva cha ahankāra itīyaṁ me bhinnā prakṛitir aṣhṭadhā

The eight elements that make up My material energy are earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect, and ego.

 VERSE 5

apareyam itas tvanyāṁ prakṛitiṁ viddhi me parām jīva-bhūtāṁ mahā-bāho yayedaṁ dhāryate jagat

That is My inferior energy. But I have a superior energy beyond it, O Mighty Arjun. This is the soul energy, or jīva śhakti, made up of the embodied souls that form the foundation of existence as we know it.

 VERSE 6

etad-yonīni bhūtāni sarvāṇītyupadhāraya ahaṁ kṛitsnasya jagataḥ prabhavaḥ pralayas tathā

Know that these two of Mine are the energies that manifest all life. All creation originates from Me, and it all dissolves back into Me.

 VERSE 7

mattaḥ parataraṁ nānyat kiñchid asti dhanañjaya mayi sarvam idaṁ protaṁ sūtre maṇi-gaṇā iva

O Arjun, there is nothing greater than Me. All things reside in Me, like pearls on a string.

 VERSE 8

raso ’ham apsu kaunteya prabhāsmi śhaśhi-sūryayoḥ praṇavaḥ sarva-vedeṣhu śhabdaḥ khe pauruṣhaṁ nṛiṣhu

Son of Kunti, I am the light of the sun and moon; I am the flavor in water. I am the ability in humans, the music in ether, the hallowed syllable Om in the Vedic mantras.

 VERSE 9

puṇyo gandhaḥ pṛithivyāṁ cha tejaśh chāsmi vibhāvasau jīvanaṁ sarva-bhūteṣhu tapaśh chāsmi tapasviṣhu

I am the brightness in fire and the pure scent of the Earth. I am the life-force of all creatures and the ascetic's penance.

 VERSE 10

bījaṁ māṁ sarva-bhūtānāṁ viddhi pārtha sanātanam buddhir buddhimatām asmi tejas tejasvinām aham

I am the eternal seed that all beings come from, O Arjun. I am the glory of the splendid, and the wisdom of the clever.

 VERSE 11

balaṁ balavatāṁ chāhaṁ kāma-rāga-vivarjitam dharmāviruddho bhūteṣhu kāmo ’smi bharatarṣhabha

The strongest of the Bharatas, O greatest of them all, I am their power without passion or desire. I am a sexual activity with virtue or scriptural injunctions.

 VERSE 12

ye chaiva sāttvikā bhāvā rājasās tāmasāśh cha ye matta eveti tān viddhi na tvahaṁ teṣhu te mayi

My energy is the manifestation of the three states of material existence: kindness, passion, and ignorance. Though I am beyond them, they are in Me.

 VERSE 13

tribhir guṇa-mayair bhāvair ebhiḥ sarvam idaṁ jagat mohitaṁ nābhijānāti māmebhyaḥ param avyayam

I, the imperishable and everlasting, am unknown to the inhabitants of this world because they are deluded by the three modes of Maya.

 VERSE 14

daivī hyeṣhā guṇa-mayī mama māyā duratyayā mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te

The three aspects of nature that make up my divine energy Maya are exceedingly challenging to defeat. But it is readily crossed by those who submit to Me.

 VERSE 15

na māṁ duṣhkṛitino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ māyayāpahṛita-jñānā āsuraṁ bhāvam āśhritāḥ

There are four types of people who refuse to submit to Me: the uneducated, the misled in their thinking, the demoniac in nature, and the sluggish followers of their lower nature despite knowing Me.

 VERSE 16

chatur-vidhā bhajante māṁ janāḥ sukṛitino ’rjuna ārto jijñāsur arthārthī jñānī cha bharatarṣhabha

The sorrowful, the seekers of knowledge, the searchers of worldly possessions, and those placed in knowledge are the four types of devout individuals who participate in My devotion, O greatest of the Bharatas.

 VERSE 17

teṣhāṁ jñānī nitya-yukta eka-bhaktir viśhiṣhyate priyo hi jñānino ’tyartham ahaṁ sa cha mama priyaḥ

Of these, I count the highest, since they are persistently and solely committed to Me, and they worship Me with wisdom. They are quite precious to me, and I am very dear to them.

 VERSE 18

udārāḥ sarva evaite jñānī tvātmaiva me matam āsthitaḥ sa hi yuktātmā mām evānuttamāṁ gatim

That makes all of those who follow Me noble. However, I regard as My very self those who have attained wisdom, exhibit a firm mentality, have their intellect united with Me, and have made Me their only ultimate objective.

 VERSE 19

bahūnāṁ janmanām ante jñānavān māṁ prapadyate vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā su-durlabhaḥ

One who is endowed with wisdom surrenders to Me after many births of spiritual practice, realizing that I am all that exists. A great soul like that is truly very rare.

 VERSE 20

kāmais tais tair hṛita-jñānāḥ prapadyante ’nya-devatāḥ taṁ taṁ niyamam āsthāya prakṛityā niyatāḥ svayā

The gods of the heavens receive the surrender of those whose wisdom has been captured by worldly cravings. They worship the devatās and perform rites intended to appease these celestial figures, as is their natural tendency.

 VERSE 21

yo yo yāṁ yāṁ tanuṁ bhaktaḥ śhraddhayārchitum ichchhati tasya tasyāchalāṁ śhraddhāṁ tām eva vidadhāmyaham

I uphold the faith of a devoted follower in whatsoever celestial form they choose to worship.

 VERSE 22

sa tayā śhraddhayā yuktas tasyārādhanam īhate labhate cha tataḥ kāmān mayaiva vihitān hi tān

When a devotee has faith, they can worship a specific heavenly god and achieve their desired goals. But in truth, I'm the only one who arranges these perks.

 VERSE 23

antavat tu phalaṁ teṣhāṁ tad bhavatyalpa-medhasām devān deva-yajo yānti mad-bhaktā yānti mām api

However, the fruit that these dimwitted people will eventually wither away. The worshippers of the celestial gods ascend to the celestial abodes, but I invite My followers to come to Me.

 VERSE 24

avyaktaṁ vyaktim āpannaṁ manyante mām abuddhayaḥ paraṁ bhāvam ajānanto mamāvyayam anuttamam

Lesser minds believe that I, the Almighty Lord Shree Krishna, was formless formerly and have taken on this personality now. They are unable to comprehend My personal form's imperishable elevated nature.

 VERSE 25

nāhaṁ prakāśhaḥ sarvasya yoga-māyā-samāvṛitaḥ mūḍho ’yaṁ nābhijānāti loko mām ajam avyayam

I am hidden by My pure Yogmaya force, hence I am not visible to everyone. Therefore, those who lack knowledge are unaware of my birthlessness and changelessness.

 VERSE 26

O Arjun, I am aware of the past, present, and future, as well as every living thing; but, none is aware of me.

 VERSE 27

ichchhā-dveṣha-samutthena dvandva-mohena bhārata sarva-bhūtāni sammohaṁ sarge yānti parantapa

O son of Bharat, delusion gives rise to the dualities of desire and aversion. All living things in the material world are fooled by these, O victor of adversaries.

 VERSE 28

yeṣhāṁ tvanta-gataṁ pāpaṁ janānāṁ puṇya-karmaṇām te dvandva-moha-nirmuktā bhajante māṁ dṛiḍha-vratāḥ

However, those who have eradicated their sins via holy deeds are liberated from the delusion of dualities. Such people steadfastly worship Me.

 VERSE 29, 30, and 31

jarā-maraṇa-mokṣhāya mām āśhritya yatanti ye te brahma tadviduḥ kṛitsnam adhyātmaṁ karma chākhilam

Those who seek refuge in Me in their quest for freedom from old age and death become acquainted with the Brahman, the individual self, and the domain of karmic action collectively.

 VERSE 30

sādhibhūtādhidaivaṁ māṁ sādhiyajñaṁ cha ye viduḥ prayāṇa-kāle ’pi cha māṁ te vidur yukta-chetasaḥ

Such enlightened souls as those who recognize Me as adhiyajña (the Lord of all sacrifice rites), and as the supreme ruler of the adhibhūta (field of matter) and the adhidaiva (the heavenly gods), remain fully mindful of Me even at the time of death.
